“Fiery, passionate, poetic personality infuses the work of Joan Ades. Most invoke the form of haiku– a succinct merging of medium, vision, and welling of spirit that brings a moment to life. Ocean, mountain, grasses, skies and the constructs of humankind reveal a world that cannot be ignored– metaphors for an elusive, fleeting strength captured with sleight of hand–both there and not there. Joan’s work makes my heart sing.” —Susan Manuso |

Chine-colle: A printmaking technique in which paper of a different color or texture is adhered to the overall piece. The paper is actually bonded (not just glued on as a collage element) to the heavier support paper during the printmaking process. The term translates from French as “chine”= tissue, and “colle” = glue or paste. The word chine is used because the thin paper traditionally used was imported to Europe from China, India and Japan.
Collagraph: A print made from a collage plate. The plate is created by attaching material such as cardboard, aluminum, string, sand, etc. to the base plate. Dampened paper is then placed on top of the inked plate and run through a printing press. The resulting impression is that of embossing as well as printing.
Giclée: A French word meaning, “a spraying of pigments.” With this high-end method of reproduction, using archival paper and inks, the art of making prints has become even more precise. Paper for each work is hand-mounted onto a drum which rotates during printing. Exact calculations of hue, value, and density are achieved by directing over four million droplets of ink through sixty four printer nozzles. This allows for multiple chromatic possibilities.
Monotype: A design is drawn in ink or paint on any smooth surface. While the ink or paint is still wet, a piece of paper is laid on top of it and pressure applied, either with a press or by hand. The process, by its name, is meant to produce a single impression.
